"Gone are the days when people would just go to an industrial park to seek out a brewery," Ian Zech told Triangle Around Town. "Now you've got to make it a destination. You've got to give them more than beer." Zech and his partner, Rob Smith, found the space for that idea at 133 East Main Street in downtown Youngsville. On September 12, 2026, North State Brewing Company opened with a ribbon cutting, and every attendee got a free t-shirt.
The brewery is small on purpose. Zech and Smith brew one barrel at a time, about 30 gallons per batch. Before opening, Zech said they had found used equipment from a Virginia brew club that had shut down, sourced more through auctions, and were not borrowing money. A brewery that size doesn't try to draw people on beer alone. It counts on the block around it. Zech said as much in the same interview: "Food keeps people there. Outdoor space is key."
That's why the most useful way to read downtown Youngsville this fall is as a set of neighbors that fill in each other's gaps. Each business covers something the others leave out.
A few doors, and who covers what
The article that introduced North State placed it alongside Yacht Club Beverage House, Scoops on Main and HomeSlice Tavern, and called them a cluster that gives people a reason to park and stay on Main Street. Here's how they line up on posted hours and what each one serves.
| Business | Address | What it covers | Posted hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scoops on Main | 116 E Main St | 50+ ice cream flavors, freeze-dried candy, burgers, hot dogs, fries | Mon–Sat noon–9 p.m., closed Sunday |
| Yacht Club Beverage House | 118 E Main St | Craft beer, wine, bourbon and other liquor, tropical cocktails, THC drinks and "hemptails" | Sun–Thu noon–9 p.m. "or so," Fri–Sat noon–11 p.m. "or so" |
| North State Brewing Company | 133 E Main St | House beer, mead, hard kombucha, scheduled food trucks | Noon–10 p.m. on the day its site was checked; no weekly schedule posted |
| HomeSlice Tavern | 111 E Persimmon St | Full bar, pizza, burgers, wings, indoor and outdoor seating | Pizza: Mon–Thu noon–10 p.m., Fri–Sat 11 a.m.–11 p.m., Sun 11 a.m.–10 p.m. |
Read the table by food and the design shows. Yacht Club pours a wide range of drinks and sends customers to nearby food options. North State brings food in by truck on scheduled evenings. That leaves Scoops at 116 and HomeSlice around the corner on Persimmon Street as the two kitchens a drink-focused block leans on. Scoops serves burgers and hot dogs along with ice cream. HomeSlice's pizza menu runs until 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
Sunday is where the table matters most. Scoops posts Sunday as closed, so on Sunday the steady kitchen for this stretch of downtown is HomeSlice, which serves pizza from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
HomeSlice also runs the most regular weeknight schedule on the block: karaoke on Tuesdays from 8:30 to 11:30 p.m., game night on Wednesdays from 7 p.m. to midnight, and throwback hip-hop on Saturdays from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.
What 133 East Main is pouring
North State's first beer in the keg was a Hazy IPA. The posted tap list has grown well past that, and it leans toward variety over volume, which fits a one-barrel system:
- Hazy and West Coast IPAs
- A Märzen and a Vienna lager
- A fruited Berliner-style sour
- A brown ale and a Belgian blonde
- Silk & Bloom, a melomel mead
- Cape Boocha hard kombucha
With the mead and kombucha on tap, someone who doesn't drink beer still has something to order. Small batches also mean the list can change, and the site doesn't say when it was last updated. Treat the list as a snapshot.
The fall calendar runs through the same doors
The Town of Youngsville's events page puts nearly all of the season's community dates on Main Street. Scoops is the contact for the first two. When you add North State's food-truck schedule and HomeSlice's holiday hours, the block's next two months look like this:
- Saturday, October 17: Cartel Tacos Food Truck at North State, 5–9 p.m.
- Friday, October 30: Trick or Treat on Main Street, 4–7 p.m. Contact is Scoops on Main.
- Saturday, October 31: Halloween hours at HomeSlice Tavern, 11 a.m.–1 a.m.
- Saturday, November 14: El Toro Alebrije Tacos & Tapas at North State, 5–9 p.m.
- Saturday, November 21: Holiday Market on Main Street, time still to be announced. Tacos Tigres LLC is at North State the same evening, 5–9 p.m.
- Thursday, November 26: Thanksgiving hours at HomeSlice, 11 a.m.–midnight.
- Friday, December 4: Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony at Luddy Park, 200 Youngsville Blvd, 5–8:30 p.m.
- Saturday, December 5: Christmas Parade on Main Street, 10 a.m.
Every food-truck date North State has posted so far falls on a Saturday, with the trucks parked 5 to 9 p.m.
Where the timing lines up, and where it doesn't
The Halloween weekend is the clearest case of the block covering itself. Trick or Treat on Main Street ends at 7 p.m. on Friday the 30th. The Town's flyer sends families along Main Street to visit downtown businesses. Under posted hours, Scoops stays open until 9 that night, while Yacht Club and HomeSlice run until about 11. HomeSlice then opens at 11 a.m. on Saturday the 31st and stays open until 1 a.m.
November 21 is the date to watch. That Saturday, the Town's Holiday Market and a North State food truck both land on Main Street. The truck's hours are fixed at 5 to 9 p.m. The market's time is still listed as TBD. Whether they overlap depends on a time the Town hasn't posted yet. The page lists Scoops' email for market questions and [email protected] for vendor inquiries.
The first weekend of December works differently. The tree lighting on Friday, December 4, is at Luddy Park on Youngsville Boulevard, away from the Main Street block. The parade the next morning comes back to Main Street at 10 a.m. That's an hour before HomeSlice's 11 a.m. Saturday opening for pizza, and two hours before the noon openings posted by Scoops and Yacht Club. North State's site shows a noon–10 p.m. day but no weekly schedule, so its parade-morning plans aren't posted. These are standard posted hours and may change for big days. The Town posted a "Coming Soon" notice for Trick or Treat on October 2, so expect Main Street details to keep coming in as each date gets closer.
When Zech first described the project to Triangle Around Town, he said the goal was to open before the end of 2026. North State opened well inside that window, on September 12. That puts it on Main Street for every downtown date from the October 17 taco truck to the December 5 parade.
